Has a Bachelor's degree (in American history & literature) cum laude from Amherst College, plus graduate-level study in history and anthropology at Yale & the University of California at Berkeley.
Was a Human Resources (personnel) recruiter, then manager and occasional trainer for Levi Strauss & Co. for 17 years. Before that, he was a classroom teacher in Social Studies for the St. Louis Public Schools for 4 years.
Has been active in volunteer work for over 30 years, including housing administration for low-income seniors, the arts, career development for youth as well as cultural & historical organizations.
